I don't tend to put down rules with my adopts but am very straightforward that I'm not an artist and use a base (fully credited to the artist mind you) as well as putting it in the sheet. My only rule is you can't take out the base artist's credit, after that I generally don't care what you do with the character as long as he/she was paid for.
